Pythia Ring

$350.00

The Pythia Ring is inspired by the Oracle at Delphi and is a modern talisman.

The Oracle is a feminist hero, a mystery that cannot be explained away by science (although science has proven she was real and the ancient writings were correct in many of their descriptions). Her power was mighty and absolute and she should continue to hold her place in history as a woman who spoke truth to power, inspired, and awed.

The Oracle at Delphi lived at the Temple of Apollo on Mount Parnassus in central Greece. The Oracle was a historical figure that did exist and many different women became the Oracle throughout the centuries. There were several different women who lived at the Temple of Apollo, but the head Oracle was called the Pythia. She was said to channel Apollo himself and so her words were to be taken as the god’s. She is first mentioned by Homer in the 8th century BCE but her oral tradition can be traced back to the Mycenaen era.

Just as the Oracle once did, a beautiful moonstone sits atop a tripod which is elevated over the base of the ring. The bezel cup, which holds the moonstone and is elevated by three small balls, is meant to symbolize the tripod that the Oracle sat upon while breathing vapors and relaying her prophecies to those that came to her for divine guidance. There is an open channel on the bottom of the setting which represents the fissure that ran underneath the Temple of Apollo and was the source of the vapors that the Pythia inhaled. I like to think this ring brings a bit of the Oracle along for the daily journey we all travel while she shares her wisdom with the wearer.

Each ring is first created by hand in wax and then cast in my home studio in San Diego, Ca. The bezel is hand carved to fit the moonstone perfectly (each ring will vary since these are made to order and each piece is made by hand). The result is one badass solid cast recycled sterling silver ring that will stand the test of time, like an ancient piece unearthed at a sacred site.

The Delos Collection is a series of rings, pendants, and earrings based on the myth of the ancient “floating island” of Delos. It’s first mentioned in Greek mythology as the birthplace of twin gods Apollo (the sun god) and Artemis (the goddess of hunting, wild animals, and the wilderness). It was a sacred place to the Greeks.
